How should I install the software for my new motherboard? (for Intel Pentium4 platform) (Last Update: 2002/01/03)

You should install Windows with only a basic system configuration - disk, graphics card, CDROM and memory.  Nothing else.  Follow the software installation order given below.  Having achieved a stable system like this, you should then introduce all your other cards one-by-one.

A clean install of the operating system is recommended. The following installation procedure is known to work for Windows 98SE and Me, and can be easily adapted to Windows 2000:

OS
WinXP
Win2K
Win9X/Me
1. For a really clean boot ... boot into DOS using a floppy, then:
  • Use FDISK to create DOS partition on disk (!!This destroys existing data on disk!!)
  • FORMAT C: /S to format disk (use /Q for quick format) (!!This destroys existing data on disk!!)

Note:

  • For Win2K/XP users, install os by boot from cdrom please.
  • The Fdisk progrom included in Win9X does NOT support harddisk larger than 64GB, click here for more detail please.
  • For users who have harddisk larger than 137GB, please upgrade your Operating System to WinXP SP1 or newer.Click here for more detail please.
2. Install Windows
3. Install WindowsXP ServicePack first. If you have Windows2000, install Windows2000 Service Pack first. (SP2 currently, May, 2001). If you are using AMD Athlon / Duron processor, you may need a registry fix, please refer to Microsoft Web Site. The document also be available on AMD WEB Site ( you may need Adobe Acrobat Reader ). Download the patch from AMD Web Site.
If you have connect to network, we suggest you run "Windows Update" in this step.
4. Install latest Intel INF driver (download from local)
5. Install latest Intel UltraATA Storage Driver (for Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition(SE), Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Windows NT 4.0,Windows 2000 and WindowsXP) (download from local)
6. XP built-in DirectX 8.1 Install latest DirectX and latest patches. The latest reversion of DirectX is 8.1. Users of video capture devices should install Video Capture Update after installing the DirectX 8.0 or 8.0a runtime.
7.

Install latest video drivers

8. Add sound card and then install latest sound card drivers
9.

Install latest HPT370 software (on the TH7-RAID and other RAID onboard motherboards) . If you are installing Windows 2000 or NT 4.0, you need install HPT driver in step 2 by pressing F6 when you see the hint on the blue booting screen. See the manual of Windows or our installation guide.

  1. How to install HPT366/370 driver in Windows NT 4.0?
  2. Quick Installation Guide- How to install Windows XP with HPT37X driver 2.0.1019
10. And other devices one by one, and Install their latest drivers, e.g. joystick, graphics tablet, etc
11. Install applications
12. Confirm the system is working and then tweak BIOS if required

The basic principal is to work up from the most basic software towards the higher-level applications. Some people have reported that it is necessary to defrag before and after installing DirectX, but this should be unnecessary if the disk was formatted before installation. Note that on the KT7-RAID and KT7A-RAID it is advisable to install the HPT370 software after the sound card software, to avoid conflicts.
